Cops Buy Wedding Ring Pawned to Care for Wife with Dementia
Police from Cornwall in Ontario, Canada bought back a mans wedding ring after he pawned it to buy groceries for he and his wife, Seaway News reports.
The story was told by Coun. Andre Rivett at a city council meeting Monday night.
Cops believed they were responding to a domestic dispute between an elderly married couple, until they learned the wife was suffering from dementia. They also learned the husband had pawned his wedding ring to pay for basic necessities.
The couple had been married for 54 years.
The husband told officers he was having trouble caring for his wife and finding ways to pay for food.
The officers response was generous, to say the least. They went back to the station and raised $130 to buy back the husbands ring, as well as an additional $150 to foot their grocery bill. The money all came from their own pockets.
The audience was completely silent as Coun. Andre Rivette delivered the story. When finished, council members and attendees erupted in applause.
The officers are slated to receive a commendation from the police services board.
